How to Get from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland (Train, Bus, Car or Tour)
Every way to get from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland National Park and Pravčická Gate — train to Děčín and bus 434, the scenic route via Germany, driving and parking, tickets and prices for 2026, compared by a local guide.

The easiest way from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland without a car is the train from Prague Main Station (Praha hl. n.) to Děčín, about 1 h 20 min – 1 h 45 min, then bus 434 from Děčín to Hřensko and Pravčická Gate, about 25 minutes. Door to trail it takes around 2.5 hours. By car it's about 130 km and 1 h 45 min – 2 hours via the D8 motorway (you need a Czech motorway vignette, 230 CZK for one day in 2026). A guided day trip takes the same time by minivan, with no transfers.
I make this journey several times a week, by car with groups and by train when I'm hiking on my own. Here is how each option really works.
Quick comparison
| Option | Time one way | Approx. cost (one way, per person) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train + bus 434 | ~2.5 h | ~250–350 CZK | Solo travellers, couples, one sight (Pravčická Gate or the gorges) |
| Train via Bad Schandau + ferry | ~3 h | from ~€15 | Scenic route, combining the Czech and German sides |
| Car | 1 h 45 min – 2 h | fuel + 230 CZK vignette + parking | Families, flexibility, the Bastei and the Gate in one day |
| Guided day trip | ~2 h by minivan | from €119 incl. lunch and guide | No planning, both sides of the border in one day |
Option 1: Train to Děčín + bus 434 (the classic)
Step 1 — Train Prague → Děčín. Trains leave from Praha hlavní nádraží (Prague Main Station) roughly every hour. The fastest, the international EuroCity trains to Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg, take about 1 h 20 min; slower regional fast trains (R) take about 1 h 45 min. Get off at Děčín hlavní nádraží. Buy tickets from České dráhy (cd.cz or the "Můj vlak" app); a one-way ticket costs roughly 200–250 CZK, and a seat reservation is not required within Czechia. The track follows the Vltava and then the Elbe through a deep valley after Ústí nad Labem — sit on the right-hand side going north.
Step 2 — Bus Děčín → Hřensko. Buses leave from stand 2 in front of Děčín main station:
- Line 434 (Děčín – Hřensko – Jetřichovice – Krásná Lípa) runs every day of the year. Get off at "Hřensko, Pravčická brána" (the Tři prameny trailhead) for the walk to Pravčická Gate, or in Hřensko village for the gorge boat rides.
- Line 438 goes to Mezní Louka and Mezná — handy for the Wild Gorge and the gentler route to the Gate.
- Frequency: every 30 minutes in July and August; only about 3–4 buses a day in spring, autumn and winter. Check the return times on idos.cz before you set off — missing the last bus is the most common mistake people make.
Tip: if you plan to cross into Germany on the same day (for example the Elbe ferry to Schöna or a train to Bad Schandau), buy the Elbe-Labe Ticket in Děčín instead of single bus tickets. It's a day ticket for regional trains, buses and ferries on both sides of the border: 420 CZK / €28.50 for one adult plus up to two children under 15, or 590 CZK / €40.50 for a family (2026 prices). It is not valid on EuroCity trains or for the journey from Prague.
Option 2: The scenic route via Germany
If you like trains, this is one of the most beautiful rides in Central Europe. Take the EuroCity from Prague towards Dresden and get off at Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland (about 2 hours). From there:
- To Hřensko: take the S-Bahn one stop back to Schöna and cross the Elbe on the small ferry to Hřensko (included in the Elbe-Labe Ticket).
- To the Bastei Bridge: take the S-Bahn S1 to Kurort Rathen, cross the river on the ferry and climb 30–45 minutes to the bridge. See our Bastei Bridge guide.
In summer, EuroCity trains across the border can require a seat reservation — book it together with your ticket. Remember that you pay in euros on the German side.

Option 3: Driving from Prague
- Route: D8 motorway north towards Dresden, exit for Děčín, then along the Elbe through Děčín to Hřensko. About 130 km, 1 h 45 min – 2 hours.
- Vignette: Czech motorways require an electronic vignette, bought online at edalnice.gov.cz before you drive. In 2026 a 1-day vignette costs 230 CZK, 10 days 300 CZK. Rental cars from Prague usually include it — ask at the desk. Germany has no vignette for cars.
- Parking: Hřensko has four official paid car parks (Pod skalou, U Vodopádu, by the petrol station and at Mezní Louka). Parking anywhere else along the road is prohibited and fined. On summer weekends the lots fill up by about 10:00.
- Rental tip: if you plan to cross into Germany, tell the rental company — most allow it, some charge a cross-border fee.
Option 4: A guided day trip
This is what I do, so take it with a pinch of salt (I've written an honest tour vs DIY comparison) — but there are real reasons people choose it:
- Both sides of the border in one day. Pravčická Gate and the Bastei Bridge are only about 25 km apart, but without a car combining them by public transport is close to impossible.
- No connections to miss. Buses in the park are infrequent outside summer.
- Context. Why it's called "Switzerland", what the 2022 fire changed, where the Narnia scenes were filmed.
My Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland Tour leaves central Prague at 8:30, takes up to 7 guests and includes a traditional Czech lunch; you're back around 18:30.
Sample day by public transport
- 07:30 – train from Praha hl. n. to Děčín
- 09:15 – bus 434 from Děčín (stand 2) to Hřensko, Pravčická brána
- 10:00–13:30 – hike to Pravčická Gate and back (or on to Mezní Louka)
- 14:00 – late lunch in Hřensko; from April to October, a boat ride through the Kamenice gorges
- Late afternoon – bus back to Děčín and train to Prague, home by about 19:30
