The stone arches of the Bastei Bridge between sandstone towers in Saxon Switzerland

The Bastei Bridge (Basteibrücke) is a sandstone bridge built in 1851 between rock towers high above the river Elbe in Saxon Switzerland National Park, Germany. It's free to visit, open around the clock, and about 2 hours from Prague by car or train. The viewpoint next to it sits 194 metres above the Elbe and is the most visited spot in Saxon Switzerland — go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds.

I take small groups here from Prague every week in season. Here's how to plan your own visit.

What you'll see

The bridge itself. The stone bridge replaced a wooden one from 1824 and was built purely for the view — it was one of Europe's first tourist attractions. It connects a chain of sandstone towers over the Mardertelle gorge, and the rock formations around it look different with every step.

The Bastei viewpoint (Basteiaussicht). The classic lookout over the bend of the Elbe and the village of Rathen, 194 m below. It was closed for years because the rock was crumbling under visitors' feet; a new 20-metre viewing platform, half of it cantilevered over the drop, opened in February 2023. It is free and step-free.

Neurathen Castle (Felsenburg Neurathen). The remains of a medieval rock castle, reached from the bridge. It has been closed since September 2023 after measurements showed movement in the rock, and it stays closed until further notice. You can still see it from the bridge.

The view to Lilienstein and Königstein. On a clear day you can see the flat-topped table mountains of Lilienstein and the Königstein fortress across the valley.

View from the Bastei over the Elbe river and the village of Rathen

The rock here, like across the whole region, is the floor of a sea that covered this area about 90 million years ago. Rain and frost carved it into the towers you see today.

How to get to the Bastei Bridge from Prague

Option Time one way Good to know
Car ~2 h Drive via Děčín and Bad Schandau. Use the paid Bastei car park; the walk to the bridge is 10–15 min. It fills up on summer weekends.
Train + ferry + hike ~2.5–3 h EuroCity train Prague → Bad Schandau (about 2 h), S-Bahn S1 to Kurort Rathen (10 min), small ferry across the Elbe, then a steep 30–45 min climb up to the bridge.
Guided day trip ~2 h by minivan Combines the Bastei with Pravčická Gate on the Czech side in one day — very hard to do by public transport.

Tip: If you go by train, the Elbe Valley route between Děčín and Bad Schandau is one of the most beautiful train rides in Central Europe — keep your eyes on the window.

Best time to visit

  • Time of day: before 10:00 or after 16:00. Coach groups arrive late morning; at sunrise you may have the platform almost to yourself.
  • Season: all year. Autumn colours peak around mid-October; winter frost or fog turns the rocks into something from a fairy tale.
  • Weather: fog in the valley is common in the morning. If the forecast says "inversion", go early — the towers rise out of a sea of cloud.

Combining the Bastei with Bohemian Switzerland

The Bastei is only about 25 km from Pravčická Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, on the Czech side of the border. With a car you can do both in one long day:

  1. Leave Prague by 8:00, drive to the Bastei (arrive ~10:00)
  2. Walk the bridge and the viewpoint (1–1.5 h)
  3. Drive 40 minutes to Hřensko, have lunch
  4. Hike to Pravčická Gate and back (3 h)
  5. Back in Prague around 18:30

That's exactly the route of my Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland Tour. For the Czech side in more detail, see the Bohemian Switzerland National Park guide.

Practical tips

  • Pay in euros. You're in Germany — card works at the car park and restaurant, but bring some cash.
  • Bring ID. There's no border control, but carry your passport or ID card.
  • Watch the edges. Some viewpoints around the Bastei have no railing; hold on to children.
  • Shoes: trainers are fine for the bridge; proper hiking shoes if you walk up from Rathen.
  • Food: there's a hotel restaurant and kiosks at the top, busy at lunchtime.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bastei Bridge free to visit?

Yes. The bridge and the new viewing platform are free and open 24 hours a day, all year round. You only pay for parking (or the ferry if you come from Rathen). Neurathen Castle, which used to charge a small fee, is closed.

How long do you need at the Bastei Bridge?

One to two hours is enough to walk the bridge, the viewing platform and the nearby lookouts. Plan half a day if you hike up from Rathen and back.

Can you visit the Bastei Bridge as a day trip from Prague?

Yes. It's about 2 hours each way by car or 2.5–3 hours by train, ferry and a short hike. Many visitors combine it with Pravčická Gate in Bohemian Switzerland on the same day.

Is the Bastei Bridge open in 2026?

Yes, the bridge and the viewing platform are open. Only Neurathen Castle next to the bridge has been closed since September 2023 because of rock movement.

Is the Bastei Bridge worth it?

Yes — it's one of the most dramatic viewpoints in Central Europe. It gets crowded around midday, so the trick is to arrive early or late, or to pair it with quieter trails in Bohemian Switzerland.

Do I need a passport to visit the Bastei from Prague?

There are no border checks between Czechia and Germany (both are in the Schengen area), but you're required to carry a valid passport or national ID card.
