Sunrise and fog over sandstone towers in the Elbe valley in the cold season

Yes, Bohemian Switzerland is worth visiting in winter — if you like quiet trails, frost and mist rather than long summer days. From November to March, Pravčická Gate is open only Friday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00 (125 CZK), the gorge boats in Hřensko don't run, buses from Děčín run only 3–4 times a day, and it gets dark around 16:00 in December. On the German side, the Bastei Bridge is open all year and Königstein Fortress is open daily, so a winter day trip from Prague still works well.

I guide here all year, and some of my favourite days have been in January: hoar frost on the pines, fog lying in the Elbe valley below the Bastei, and the trail to Pravčická Gate almost to ourselves.

Always check the official sites before you go — pbrana.cz for the Gate and npcs.cz for trail closures.

Why go in winter

  • Silence. On a summer weekend the trail to Pravčická Gate is a procession. On a winter Friday you may meet only a handful of people.
  • Fog and inversions. Cold mornings often fill the Elbe valley with fog while the rock towers stick out above it. From the Bastei, this is the view photographers wait all year for.
  • Hoar frost and snow. The sandstone, the pines and the young birches growing back after the fire look completely different under frost.
  • Clear views. With no leaves on the beech trees, you see much further from the viewpoints than in summer.

What's harder in winter

  • Ice. This is the big one. Sandstone steps and shaded paths freeze, and the climb to Pravčická Gate has many steps. Microspikes (light slip-on crampons) make a huge difference; trainers are not enough.
  • Short days. In late December the sun rises around 8:00 and sets around 16:00. In the deep valleys it gets dark even earlier. Plan to be back at the car or bus stop by 15:30.
  • Sparse public transport. With only a few buses a day between Děčín and Hřensko, missing one can mean waiting 3–4 hours. Check idos.cz the day before.
  • Fewer places to eat. Many restaurants in Hřensko and huts in the park close or cut their hours. Bring a thermos and snacks.

A winter day that works

By car (or on a tour):

  1. 08:00 — leave Prague
  2. 10:00 — the Bastei Bridge while the fog is still in the valley
  3. 12:00 — lunch on the German side or in Hřensko
  4. 13:00–15:30 — hike to Pravčická Gate (on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday)
  5. 16:00 — head back as it gets dark; in Prague by about 18:00

On weekdays, when the Gate is closed, swap it for a walk to the Jetřichovice viewpoints or a visit to Königstein Fortress, which is open daily all winter.

By public transport: train to Děčín, bus 434 to the "Hřensko, Pravčická brána" stop, the Gate and back, and the afternoon bus to Děčín. On a weekend in December, add the Dresden Christmas market (Striezelmarkt, 25 November – 24 December 2026) — Dresden is only an hour from Děčín by train. What to wear and bring

  • Waterproof hiking boots with a good grip
  • Microspikes for icy steps (most outdoor shops in Prague sell them)
  • Layers: thermal base layer, fleece, insulated jacket, hat and gloves. Temperatures around 0 °C are typical, and it feels colder in the damp gorges.
  • Headlamp — just in case the walk takes longer than planned
  • Thermos with tea, snacks, and cash in Czech crowns for the Gate

Is it safe?

Yes, on the main marked trails, with the right shoes and a sensible plan. Stay on the trails, keep clear of the edges of viewpoints (many have no railing, and frost makes the rock slippery), and respect closure signs — after storms or heavy snow, the park closes sections because of the risk of falling trees. Don't attempt the steeper ladders and rock passages, such as some around Jetřichovice, in icy conditions.
