Pravčická Gate: How to Visit Europe's Largest Sandstone Arch
Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) in Bohemian Switzerland — 2026 opening hours and prices, the best hiking route from Hřensko, which trails are still closed after the fire, and tips from a local guide.

Pravčická Gate (Pravčická brána) is the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe: 16 metres high with a span of 26.5 metres, standing at 447 m above sea level in Bohemian Switzerland National Park, about 2 hours north of Prague. You reach it on foot only — the classic route is a 2 km climb (45–60 minutes) from the Tři prameny bus stop near Hřensko. Admission is 125 CZK for adults (2026), and from November to March it is open only Friday to Sunday.
I walk up to the Gate with small groups most weeks of the year. This is everything I'd tell you if you were planning to go on your own.

What makes it special
The arch is what's left of a sandstone wall that frost, wind and water slowly hollowed out. The rock itself is the floor of a sea that covered this region around 90 million years ago. There is no bigger natural sandstone bridge anywhere in Europe — which is why the Gate is the symbol of the whole national park and protected as a national natural monument.
People have been coming here for a long time. The first written mention of the Gate dates from 1410, and tourism started in the early 19th century: a simple bark-covered hut serving drinks stood under the arch from 1826, and the owners of the land — the Clary-Aldringen family from Děčín — charged admission right from the start.
You can't walk on top of the arch. That used to be part of the visit, but in 1982 geologists found cracks in the structure, the railings and steps were removed and walking on the Gate was banned for good. Today the arch is constantly monitored for movement, moisture and temperature. You walk around and below it, and the best views are from the rock terraces right next to it.

The Falcon's Nest (Sokolí hnízdo)
Right under the arch stands a romantic chalet with wooden balconies: the Falcon's Nest. Prince Edmund Clary-Aldringen had it built in 1881–82 as a restaurant and hotel for aristocratic guests — and, as I like to tell my groups, it went up in a single season, which was close to a record at the time. Today it houses a restaurant with a terrace. In winter, services are limited, so don't count on a hot lunch there between November and March.
Is this the bridge from Narnia?
Yes. The scene in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) where the children cross a stone bridge was filmed at Pravčická Gate in 2004. Other shots for the same film were made at Tisá Rocks and the Adršpach rocks, both in Czechia.

How to hike to Pravčická Gate
Route 1: from Hřensko / Tři prameny (the classic)
This is the shortest and most popular way up, and the one I use with groups.
- Start: the Tři prameny junction, about 2 km outside Hřensko on the road to Mezní Louka. Bus 434 stops here ("Hřensko, Pravčická brána"), and there is paid parking in Hřensko.
- Trail: red-marked, about 2 km up through the Dlouhý důl valley to the Gate
- Time: 45–60 minutes up, 30–40 minutes down
- Climb: roughly 250–300 metres of elevation gain, steady but never technical
- Good to know: this path runs through forest that burned in 2022. You'll see blackened trunks and thousands of young birches and pines growing back — honestly one of the most interesting parts of the walk today.
Route 2: from Mezní Louka on the Mill Path (gentler)
From the Mezní Louka hotel and car park (bus 434/438), the Mlýnská cesta (Mill Path) and the red trail bring you to the Gate in about 3.5 km with less climbing. A good choice if you want to combine the Gate with the Kamenice gorges in one day.
Closed: the Gabriel Trail
The famous Gabriel Trail (Gabrielina stezka), which used to run along the rock walls from the Gate to Mezní Louka, has been closed since the 2022 fire because of falling trees and rockfall. The national park administration will reassess the slopes around 2027 at the earliest. More in Bohemian Switzerland after the 2022 fire. Older blogs and maps still show it as the standard loop — ignore them, and never walk past the closure signs.
Tickets, opening hours and practical details
- Admission (2026): 125 CZK (about €5) for adults; 50 CZK for children 6–14, students and seniors over 65. Children under 6 go free.
- How to pay: online tickets are available on the official website pbrana.cz. At the gate, bring cash in Czech crowns — card payment is not reliable and there is no ATM up there.
- Summer season: from the end of March until the end of October, daily 10:00–18:00
- Winter season: November to March, Friday to Sunday only, 10:00–16:00, with limited services
- The trail itself is open any time, but the viewpoints next to the arch are inside the paid area, so time your walk with the opening hours.
When to go
- Best time of day: arrive at 10:00 when it opens, or after 15:00. Between 11:00 and 14:00 in summer the terraces get crowded.
- Best season: autumn (late September to October) for golden beech forest and clear air. Spring is fresh and quiet.
- Winter: quiet and atmospheric, often with frost or mist, but the steps can be icy and it gets dark before 16:30. See Bohemian Switzerland in winter.
- Weekdays are much quieter than weekends all year.
Pravčická Gate from Prague in one day
With a car, an early start and a good plan, you can see the Gate and the Bastei Bridge in Saxon Switzerland on the same day — that's exactly what my Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland Tour does, with lunch included. By public transport, the Gate alone makes a full and rewarding day: see How to get from Prague to Bohemian Switzerland for train and bus options.
For the whole park — gorges, viewpoints, where to eat — read the Bohemian Switzerland National Park guide.
Practical tips from the trail
- Shoes: trail shoes or hiking boots. The path is sandy and the steps are uneven, and both get slippery when wet.
- Water: carry your own; the Falcon's Nest is the only place to buy anything on the way.
- Edges: some rock terraces have no railing — keep children close.
- Prams and wheelchairs: not possible on the climb from Tři prameny.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the hike to Pravčická Gate?
From the Tři prameny stop near Hřensko it's about 2 km one way, which takes 45–60 minutes uphill and 30–40 minutes down. Plan 3–4 hours in total with time at the viewpoints. From Mezní Louka the walk is longer (about 3.5 km) but gentler.
How much does Pravčická Gate cost in 2026?
Adults pay 125 CZK; children 6–14, students and seniors over 65 pay 50 CZK; children under 6 go free. The national park itself has no entrance fee, so you only pay for the area around the arch.
Is Pravčická Gate open in winter?
Yes, but only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from November to March, 10:00–16:00. From the end of March to the end of October it is open daily, 10:00–18:00.
Can you walk on Pravčická Gate?
No. Walking on top of the arch has been banned since 1982, when geologists discovered cracks in the rock. You can walk around its base and enjoy it from the viewpoints right next to it.
Is the Gabriel Trail open again?
No. The Gabriel Trail between Pravčická Gate and Mezní Louka has been closed since the 2022 forest fire because of the risk of falling trees and rocks. The park plans to reassess it around 2027. Use the red trail from Tři prameny or the Mill Path from Mezní Louka instead.
Was Narnia filmed at Pravčická Gate?
Yes. Scenes for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) were filmed at Pravčická Gate in 2004.
Is Pravčická Gate suitable for children?
Yes, for children who can walk an hour uphill — usually from about 6–8 years old. The path is safe and well marked, but the terraces at the top have open edges, so keep an eye on younger kids.
