The Best Day Trips from Prague in Winter (What's Actually Open, 2026/27)
Nine day trips from Prague that work from November to March — sandstone national parks, frosty rock towns, Kutná Hora, Dresden's Christmas market, castles and snow in the mountains — with winter opening days, travel times and tips.

The best day trips from Prague in winter are the ones that don't depend on summer opening hours: the Bastei Bridge in Saxon Switzerland (open all year, free), Prachov Rocks in Bohemian Paradise (open daily all winter), Kutná Hora with the Sedlec Ossuary (open daily), and Dresden with its Striezelmarkt Christmas market (25 November – 24 December 2026). Many Czech castles — including Trosky, Kokořín and the interiors of Český Krumlov — close from November to March, and others such as Karlštejn open only on some days, so always check before you go.
Winter is my quiet season as a guide, and honestly one of my favourites. Here is where I'd send friends between November and March — and what to skip.

1. The Bastei Bridge and Saxon Switzerland
The one place I'd pick if you only do one winter day trip. The Bastei Bridge is free and open 24/7, all year, and cold mornings often bring an inversion: fog fills the Elbe valley 194 m below while the sandstone towers rise above it. Nearby Königstein Fortress is open daily through the winter (9:00–17:00, €15 adults), with longer hours on Advent weekends.
Getting there: about 2 hours by car; by EuroCity train to Bad Schandau, then S-Bahn to Kurort Rathen, the ferry and a 30–45 minute climb.

2. Bohemian Switzerland and Pravčická Gate
Europe's largest sandstone arch with frost on the pines and almost no one else on the trail. From November to March the Pravčická Gate area is open Friday to Sunday only, 10:00–16:00 (125 CZK), and the gorge boats don't run. Steps can be icy — bring microspikes. More in Bohemian Switzerland in winter.
Getting there: about 2 hours by car, or train to Děčín and bus 434 to Hřensko (only a few buses a day in winter).
3. Prachov Rocks in Bohemian Paradise
A labyrinth of sandstone towers that looks spectacular with snow — and it's open every day of the year, 7:00–19:00, at off-season prices (150 CZK adults). The full circuit is 3.5 km with lots of steps, which get icy in hard frost. Trosky Castle nearby is closed in winter, but the view of its two towers from the Prachov viewpoints is still there.
Getting there: about 1.5 hours by car; by public transport via Jičín and local bus.
4. Kutná Hora
A perfect bad-weather day: most of the sights are indoors. The Sedlec Ossuary — the chapel decorated with the bones of some 40,000 people — is open daily in winter, 9:00–16:00, but entry is by timed ticket bought online in advance. St Barbara's Cathedral is one of the most beautiful Gothic churches in Central Europe. The whole historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Getting there: about 1 hour by direct train from Prague Main Station to Kutná Hora hl. n., then a short local train or bus to Sedlec and the centre.

5. Dresden and the Striezelmarkt
Dresden's Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. In 2026 it runs from 25 November to 24 December, daily 10:00–21:00 (until 14:00 on Christmas Eve), with free entry and the Stollen festival on 5 December. Add the Old Masters gallery in the Zwinger (Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00) and the Frauenkirche.
Getting there: about 2 h 15 min by EuroCity train — and the ride along the Elbe through the sandstone gorge is a highlight in itself. If you go by car, it's easy to stop at the Bastei on the way.

6. Karlštejn Castle
The Gothic castle built by Emperor Charles IV to keep the crown jewels, 40 minutes from Prague by train. In winter only the basic tour runs, and only on selected days: in 2026, Friday to Sunday in November and until 20 December, closed 21–25 December, and daily from 26 to 31 December, 10:00–15:00. Dates from January to March 2027 hadn't been published at the time of writing — check hrad-karlstejn.cz. The walk up from the station (20–30 minutes) is pretty with frost.

7. Křivoklát Castle
A royal hunting castle in the middle of the Křivoklátsko forest. In winter it opens on weekends on selected dates (in 2026: weekends 1–20 November and 1–20 December, daily 27–31 December; January and March 2027 on weekends). Combine it with a walk in the surrounding forest.
Getting there: about 1.5 hours by train via Beroun, or 1 hour by car.
8. Terezín
Not a cheerful trip, but an important one: the former fortress town that the Nazis turned into a ghetto and a Gestapo prison. The Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum are open all winter (closed 24–26 December and 1 January). Winter, with fewer visitors, suits the place.
Getting there: about 1 hour by bus from Prague.
9. The Krkonoše mountains (for snow)
If you want real snow, head to the Giant Mountains. Špindlerův Mlýn is about 2 h 20 min – 2 h 50 min by direct bus from Prague, with ski lifts, sledging and winter walks. For cross-country skiing, the Jizera Mountains around Bedřichov (about 1.5 hours from Prague) have one of the largest groomed trail networks in Central Europe. Snow isn't guaranteed before Christmas; mid-January to March is the safest bet.
Skip in winter (or check first)
- Trosky Castle — closed from November to March (the towers are still visible from outside)
- Kokořín Castle — winter opening hasn't been published; usually closed
- Český Krumlov — the town is lovely, but the castle interiors are mostly closed and it's nearly 3 hours each way
- The Kamenice gorge boats in Hřensko — no boats until spring
Winter day-trip tips
- Daylight: in late December the sun rises around 8:00 and sets around 16:00. Leave Prague early and plan outdoor sights for the middle of the day.
- Temperature: around 0 °C in December and January in Prague, colder in the hills. Dress in layers.
- Ice: for any hike on sandstone steps (Bohemian Switzerland, Prachov, the Bastei), take boots with a good grip and microspikes.
- Check opening days the evening before. Winter hours change between seasons, and many places open only on weekends or close over Christmas.
- Christmas in Prague: the Prague Christmas markets run from about 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 — perfect for the evening after a day out.
