Dresden's Striezelmarkt, one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany (since 1434), runs from Wednesday 25 November to Thursday 24 December 2026 on the Altmarkt, daily 10:00–21:00 (opening day from 16:30, Christmas Eve until 14:00). Entry is free. From Prague it's an easy day trip: about 2 hours by direct EuroCity train (tickets from about €17), 2 hours by bus, or about 2 hours by car — with time to stop at the Bastei Bridge in Saxon Switzerland on the way.

Every December guests ask me whether Dresden is worth it after Prague's own Christmas markets. My answer is yes — it's a different, very Saxon experience, and the trip there runs through the sandstone gorge of the Elbe.

What makes the Striezelmarkt special

The market began in 1434, when Elector Friedrich II allowed a market on the Altmarkt to sell meat for the Christmas meal. Its name comes from Striezel, the old word for Stollen — the fruit bread that Dresden is famous for. Today more than two million people a year visit its roughly 240 stalls.

  • The Christmas pyramid: a 14.62 m tiered pyramid from the Ore Mountains, listed as the world's largest of its kind.
  • Ore Mountain crafts: wooden pyramids, candle arches (Schwibbögen), incense smokers (Räuchermänner) and nutcrackers.
  • Dresden Stollen, Pulsnitz gingerbread, Lusatian blue-print textiles and Herrnhut stars.
  • The Pflaumentoffel — a little chimney-sweep figure made of prunes, a Dresden tradition.
  • Mulled wine is served in collectable Striezelmarkt mugs with a deposit — keep it as a souvenir or hand it back.
  • Stollen Festival (5 December): a parade through the old town and the ceremonial cutting of a giant Stollen weighing several tonnes. It's the busiest day of the season.

The other Dresden Christmas markets (2026)

Dresden has around a dozen Christmas markets, most within walking distance of each other:

Market Where 2026 dates
Advent auf dem Neumarkt under the Frauenkirche — historic guild crafts 25 Nov – 23 Dec, then 27–30 Dec, New Year's Eve and 2–3 Jan
Weihnachtsmarkt an der Frauenkirche Münzgasse, with an 8 m walk-in pyramid 25 Nov – 24 Dec
Medieval Christmas in the Stallhof the castle's stable yard — fire, mead and wooden hot tubs 25 Nov – 23 Dec; "Rauhnächte" 27–30 Dec and 2–6 Jan
Augustusmarkt Hauptstraße, Neustadt — international food 25 Nov 2026 – 3 Jan 2027 (closed 24–26 Dec, 1 Jan)
Romantic market at the Palace Taschenberg 27 Nov – 24 Dec
Winterlichter Prager Straße 25 Nov – 23 Dec
Elbhangfest market Loschwitz, by the Blue Wonder bridge — small and local 5–20 Dec

My tip: start at the Striezelmarkt in the morning, walk to the Neumarkt and the Frauenkirche, then the Stallhof in the late afternoon when the fires are lit.

How to get from Prague to Dresden

Option Time Price (one way) Good to know
EuroCity train ~2 h 05 – 2 h 25 from ~€17 (DB/ČD saver fares) Direct from Praha hl. n. to Dresden Hbf, roughly every 1–2 hours; the line follows the Elbe gorge — sit on the right going north for the river view.
Bus (FlixBus etc.) ~1 h 50 – 2 h 10 ~€10–20 Frequent; can be slower in pre-Christmas traffic.
Car ~2 h fuel + 230 CZK Czech vignette No vignette needed in Germany. Use park-and-ride or a city car park — the old town is busy on weekends.

From Dresden Hauptbahnhof it's a 10–15 minute walk along Prager Straße to the Altmarkt.

Add Saxon Switzerland on the way

If you drive, the Bastei Bridge is only about 40 minutes from Dresden and lies right on the way from Prague. A winter day that works:

  1. 08:00 leave Prague
  2. 09:45 the Bastei Bridge and viewpoints — often frosty or misty in December, and nearly empty
  3. 12:00 drive on to Dresden (~40 min), lunch
  4. Afternoon and evening: Striezelmarkt, Neumarkt and the Stallhof as the lights come on
  5. ~20:00 drive back, in Prague by about 22:00

By train you can also stop at Bad Schandau for an hour by the Elbe. More ideas: Saxon Switzerland from Prague and day trips from Prague in winter.

Tips

  • Go on a weekday. Saturdays — and above all Stollen Festival Saturday (5 December) — are very crowded.
  • Arrive at opening time if you want to shop for crafts in peace; come back after dark for the atmosphere.
  • Bring cash for small stalls, although many take cards.
  • Dress warmly. December temperatures are around freezing, and you'll be outside for hours.
  • Carry your passport or ID card — there are no border checks, but it's required.
